GSM Explained: What Net Weight Really Tells You

Walk into any net market and you will hear GSM quoted like a magic number: "90 GSM, best quality." But what does it actually measure, and when does a higher number matter? Here is the manufacturer's view.

What GSM Measures

GSM stands for grams per square metre — cut out exactly one square metre of net, weigh it, and that is the GSM. It combines two things: the thickness (denier) of the yarn and the density of the knit.

Because weight costs money, GSM is also the honest core of net pricing. When two quotes for "the same" net differ sharply, weigh a sample of each. Underweight supply is the oldest trick in the trade.

Higher GSM Is Not Always Better

A heavier net is stronger, but it also costs more, weighs more on the structure and passes less air. A 200 GSM net on a light bamboo nursery frame is wasted money and extra wind load. Match the GSM to the job:

• ✓Strength driven uses (safety nets, aquaculture, windbreaks in open fields): prioritise GSM and denier.
• ✓Shade driven uses (nurseries, poly houses): prioritise shade percentage first, then pick the standard GSM for that shade.
• ✓Longevity driven uses (parking, permanent structures): mid to high GSM plus a strong UV package.

How We Control GSM at the Plant

On our lines, GSM is set by yarn denier and knit density, then verified by cutting and weighing samples from every production run. A net sold as 120 GSM should weigh 120 grams per square metre within a small tolerance, roll after roll. That consistency is what batch testing buys you.

Checking GSM Yourself

You do not need a lab. Cut a 10 cm x 10 cm square, weigh it on a jewellery scale, and multiply by 100. If the number is more than a few percent below the invoice, ask questions.
