The same knitted HDPE fabric that shades a nursery also stops debris on a twenty storey site and keeps gulls out of a fish pond. Few industrial materials are this versatile. Here is a tour of the major applications and the specs that make each one work.
On the farm
Anti bird netting with 15 to 25 mm mesh protects grapes, cherries and berries through the ripening weeks. Hail netting at 4 to 10 mm openings takes the impact that would bruise an apple crop. Insect screens at 40 to 80 mesh keep fruit flies and thrips out of greenhouses while air keeps moving. Shade nets from 30% to 80% fight sunburn on fruit and heat stress on vegetables. Windbreaks installed vertically at around 40% porosity slow damaging gusts without creating turbulence on the lee side.
In water
Aquaculture is a demanding customer: fish and shrimp pond netting must be high tensile, knot stable and resistant to salt mist. Heavy duty HDPE nets serve as pond covers against birds, cage walls and harvest partitions, and shrug off the wet, corrosive environment that destroys metal mesh.
At home
Lightweight UV stabilised nets have quietly become a household product: balcony privacy screens, terrace garden shade, pet safety on open railings and temporary fencing all use the same easy to install fabric.
On construction sites
This is where specifications turn serious. Scaffold and debris netting must be reinforced and UV resistant, wrapping the structure to contain falling material. Fall protection nets are thicker with impact buffering to arrest loads safely. Construction wrap at medium density screens dust and sightlines around the site perimeter.
In industry
Dust control netting over soil and sand piles is lightweight and breathable, keeping particulates down without trapping moisture. Stockpile covers and area isolation use engineering grade net that resists wind load and corrosion. Warehouses use the same fabric on racking and mezzanines to keep stored goods where they belong.
On infrastructure
Waterway debris capture, landfill covers, sand control barriers at 20 to 40% porosity, and perimeter netting along highways, railways and airports round out the list. These are project specific fabrications, usually in custom widths with reinforced borders.
